Steven E. de Souza, who wrote and directed the 1994 feature film Street Fighter, has defended the comedic elements of his original adaptation. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, de Souza remarked on recent social media commentary, noting lightheartedly that audiences now treat the 1994 release like a serious drama. [1]
The original 1994 film was the first big-screen adaptation of Capcom's video game franchise and featured a cast led by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Ming-Na Wen. The property later returned to theaters with the 2009 release Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which underperformed at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. [1]
The franchise has recently returned to cinemas under distribution partners Paramount and Legendary. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the new Street Fighter theatrical release opened at number one at the box office. [1]
