DC Studios co-head James Gunn defended his creative strategy for the DC Universe on the social media platform Threads, Variety reported. Responding to fan criticism that his current slate is not building toward a unified crossover event, Gunn stated that he dislikes the concept that individual stories lack meaning unless they lead to another project. Variety and ComicBookMovie.com both reported that Gunn confirmed the DC Universe operates as an alternate universe where projects can focus on distinct locations and time periods. [1][5]

Gunn addressed audience queries regarding specific upcoming titles, including standalone projects like Clayface, according to IGN and Tbreak UAE. IGN reported that Gunn compared the approach of the franchise to Star Wars, noting that the sci-fi property has successfully utilized standalone storytelling across various eras for five decades. Primetimer.com added that the executive's comments came amid ongoing audience debate regarding the future direction of the Justice League. [3][4][6]

Gunn began his career as a screenwriter in the mid-1990s before directing films such as Slither in 2006 and Super in 2010. He later directed major superhero franchise entries, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel Studios and The Suicide Squad for DC in 2021, before taking on his executive leadership role at DC Studios.
