Attorneys for Nick Reiner and his family trust have reached an agreement to let a mediator decide whether he can access his trust fund to pay for legal defense expenses, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline. Reiner faces a murder charge following the December 2025 deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The Hollywood Reporter and AV Club reported that the decision was addressed during a probate hearing before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ruben Garcia on October 23, 2026. [1][2][3]

AV Club and Deadline both report that the trust holds 1.5 million dollars, with AV Club noting that the agreement could allow Reiner access to up to half of the cash. Trust attorneys previously blocked access under the slayer statute, which prohibits individuals from inheriting from those they kill, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Defense attorney Anita Wu stated that criminal defendants possess a constitutional right to utilize personal funds to pay for chosen defense counsel. [1][2][3]

The release of trust funds would enable Reiner to rehire defense attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein and Karen Read, according to The Hollywood Reporter and AV Club. Jackson had withdrawn from the defense team due to financial constraints facing Reiner. AV Club and Page Six reported that the defense team sought trust access for immediate costs while in custody and to secure Jackson's representation. [1][2][7]

Rob Reiner was a filmmaker, actor, and director who received three Primetime Emmy Awards, three National Film Registry inductions, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The mediation process will now determine if the trust funds will be released to support his son's defense representation. [1][3][8]
