Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has launched a new television series adaptation of Stephen King's classic horror novel Carrie on Prime Video. TV Insider reported that the project is an eight-episode series following Carrie White, a bullied teenager with growing telekinetic powers who collides with her classmates and her mother. ScreenRant and SlashFilm both reported that the new show modernizes the source material while incorporating narrative references to King's wider literary portfolio. [1][2][3]

The series stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret, according to TV Insider. SlashFilm reported that the adaptation introduces significant characterization changes to Carrie's bullies and her mother. TV Insider also noted that the narrative builds toward the story's prom-night climax while including hidden details targeting long-time King readers. [2][3]

The production incorporates thematic ties to other intellectual properties within the author's catalogue. SlashFilm reported that Flanagan included an Easter egg referencing King's Dark Tower series, an property the director hopes to adapt in the future. ScreenRant also reported that the project references future King screen adaptations. [1][2]

The release builds on Flanagan's prior work with the author's properties. As FTMQ Film & TV reported earlier, Flanagan previously directed actor Mark Hamill in the 2024 Stephen King feature film adaptation The Life of Chuck, and cast Hamill in a cameo appearance for the new Carrie series. [10]
