Director Brian Duffield and star Austin Abrams initially resisted adding a new ending to the survival thriller Whalefall before eventually embracing the change, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The decision to attach a coda was made after the production team held test screenings. The film reframes character Jay Gardiner, played by Abrams, as an Iowa college student returning to his home town. [1]
The survival thriller is directed and produced by Duffield, who adapted the screenplay alongside Daniel Kraus, the author of the 2023 source novel, according to Wikipedia. The narrative centers on a scuba diver who is swallowed alive by a sperm whale while searching for his estranged father's remains. The feature includes supporting performances from Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. [1][6]
As FTMQ Film & TV reported earlier, the production was financed and released in theaters by Twentieth Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment. The feature stars Abrams alongside Josh Brolin, with Shue, Ortiz, Levy, and Rudd rounding out the ensemble. [8]
Duffield and his creative team opted for an open-ended narrative conclusion that leaves central questions unanswered for the audience, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The production team compared the stylistic choice to films that intentionally leave key plot points unexplained. [1]
In short
- Director Brian Duffield added a new coda to Whalefall following test screenings.
- Whalefall was co-written by Brian Duffield and novel author Daniel Kraus.
