Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has warned BBC Director General Matt Brittin that planned corporate cuts risk an irreversible deterioration in the coverage of Wales. BBC News and The Pembrokeshire Herald reported that the broadcaster announced 58 job cuts in BBC Wales alongside a 20-hour annual reduction in local television programming. The moves form part of broader UK-wide efficiency plans to save £500m. [1][4]

In a joint letter seen by BBC Wales, the first minister claimed the proposed operational changes could leave the corporation in breach of its public service obligations under its Royal Charter. Brittin replied that the BBC takes its public service responsibilities to Wales extremely seriously. [1]

The Pembrokeshire Herald reported that broadcast regulator Ofcom has demanded answers regarding the regional reductions, as Wales faces a total of £9m in operational savings. BBC Cymru Wales operates as a national division of the BBC and serves as the primary public broadcaster in Wales. [4][7]
