Director Taika Waititi has confirmed that his Star Wars feature film has been put on hold indefinitely. Variety, IGN, and Cosmic Book News reported that Waititi disclosed the update while promoting his latest feature, Klara and the Sun. Speaking to Inverse, Waititi stated that the project is on ice and that he and the studio are working on a different project together. [1][5][6]
According to Variety, Waititi's publicist instructed him not to elaborate further during the interview. The filmmaker's Star Wars project was first placed into active development in 2020. [1]
Waititi is an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Grammy winning New Zealand filmmaker, writer, and actor. As FTMQ Film & TV reported earlier, his latest dystopian feature Klara and the Sun held its world premiere at the London Film Festival on October 15, 2026. That film stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, with a screenplay written by Waititi and Dahvi Waller. [8][10]
The pause marks another development delay for Lucasfilm's theatrical Star Wars slate. ScreenRant reported that the project faces major roadblocks after years of preliminary work, though Waititi noted that he remains in collaboration with the company on an alternative project. [1][2]
