The documentary film Once Upon a Time in Harlem secured five Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations on Tuesday, Deadline and Variety reported. The project is directed by David Greaves and produced by his daughter, Liani Greaves, according to Deadline. [1][3]
Deadline reported that the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was featured at the Cannes, Telluride, Toronto, and New York film festivals. It is the only documentary to be selected by all five festivals this year, Deadline noted. [1]
The documentary was edited from nearly 30 hours of archival footage, according to Deadline. AV Club reported that director William Greaves originally filmed the material in 1972, gathering figures from the Harlem Renaissance for a recorded gathering, but left the footage unfinished before his death. [1][2]
William Greaves produced over 200 documentaries during his career after starting as an actor. His son, David Greaves, unedited and assembled the stored footage into the completed documentary, AV Club reported. [2][9]
