Former gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur. The BBC, The Wrap, Variety, Deadline, and ComingSoon all reported that a Las Vegas court handed down the sentence. According to Variety and Deadline, Judge Carli Kierny issued two consecutive terms of 20 years to life for first-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement. [1][2][3][4][5]

The 63-year-old Davis was convicted by a Las Vegas jury in August, as noted by The Wrap, Variety, and Deadline. Deadline reported that the conviction took place on August 31, while The Wrap noted the jury reached its verdict in August, nearly 30 years after the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter highlighted that Davis is the only person ever charged and convicted in connection with Shakur's death. [2][3][4][6]

During the sentencing hearing, family members of the late musician addressed the court. BBC News Entertainment reported that Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, and his brother, Maurice Shakur, both asked the judge to impose the maximum possible sentence. When Judge Kierny asked Davis if he wished to make a statement, Davis declined to express remorse and stated that he intends to appeal the case. [1]

Shakur was an influential American rapper and actor who sold more than 75 million records worldwide during his career. He released hit albums such as Me Against the World and All Eyez on Me, and starred in feature films including Juice and Poetic Justice. His fatal shooting occurred on September 7, 1996, and he died six days later from his injuries. [2][12][14]
