The United States Department of Justice has launched an antitrust investigation into five major television news networks over their decision to suspend press pool coverage of President Donald Trump. Variety, The Wrap, and The New York Times all report that federal officials are examining whether the networks engaged in an illegal group boycott after the White House denied access to select news outlets. [1][2][3]
According to The Wrap, the investigation targets ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC. The joint action by the networks followed attempts by the Trump administration to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House events. Variety reports that two to three people familiar with the matter confirmed the Justice Department informed the five outlets of its intentions. [1][2]
A spokesperson for the Justice Department stated that the Antitrust Division is investigating to determine if the news organizations violated antitrust laws. Variety and The Wrap both report that the spokesperson pointed to the network boycott, noting that group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act. [1][2]
Trump is serving as the 47th president of the United States. He previously served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021. [5]
